Shhsh, quiet. You will give Rodney Hide ideas. These people worship removal of regulations like a god. They would happilly go back to untreated timber and your other examples, they are that stupid. Afterall forcing all those developers and builders to use treated timber interferes with their "freedom of choice."

I think that incandescent bulbs will eventually die a natural death all by themselves when the so called eco bulbs become better value.
I have no problem with them in bayonet fittings but in edison screw fittings in my ceiling they don't fit.
Like others I think the Greens exploite conservation issues as a cover for a far left political agenda. If they were really interested in conservartion they weould be open to working with any political party right or left.

I thought I was being clever last year and put the eco-bulbs in all our lamps in the house. This was great, until the wife got home, and made me put all the incandescents back - I had to agree with her - the white loght they gave out was hideous!
Also pleased when I saw soon after that that if you drop one of these f***ers, you need to evacuate the house, and go round with sticky tape scraping all mercury up off floor! Forget it - we have 2 young kids. Its not worth the hassle.

Is this the biggest worry we have back home these days or what! Ban them all and bring back the candles!

Eco light bulbs are impossible to read or do detailed work by. I may as well be reading in the dark.
The same applies to flat screen monitors. What were they thinking when they phased out the CRT box on the desk!
Eco bulb technology has a long way to come before I'll buy any more.

Let's hope the new government doesn't just stop with energy efficient light bulbs and gets rid of other nanny state stuff, like those expensive building regulations that require treated timber to be used for building houses, those apprenticeships for tradesmen, that silly requirement to fence swimming pools so small children can't drown, and that awful Resource Management Act that is being used to stop those new high voltage power lines running from Whakamaru to Auckland. Oh yeah, and dog control needs to be addressed too, the government has not business telling me what my dog can and can't do.
I will keep on with the eco-bulbs, though. I have been replacing the old incandescents with eco-bulbs when the incandescents fail and the eco-bulbs work just fine. Haven't had to replace an eco-bulb yet (the oldest is four years old) and they are just as bright after a few minutes.

Alex (Thorndon) - Your synopsis of left thinking is right on the money!
I also find it amazing that when a greenie or leftie is presented with evidence that contradicts there own views they inevitably try to discredit it based on some percieved problem with the source of the information. I've heard them blame the oil companies, conspiracy theories about Uni researchers being paid out by businessmen. God you name it - they'll try it.
It's like the greens are the only ones with any consious or concern for the environment hence they must be correct.
Gandalf - they contain consierably more mercury than stantard commercial bulbs. End of story.

Keep the old style lights going because the new eco bulbs are a complete con! I'd like to see proof that they last extradinary claims of 7 years life! I've already had to replace 3 in one year! They cost more, pollute the environment with mercury, die faster than the old bulbs and therefore are a complete and utter croc! I'm sticking with the old style down lights and giving up on these eco bulbs! BTW I don't have dimmer switches.

Yes definitely ban them. At the same time let's put a limit on the number of sheets of toilet paper we can use, ban hamburgers and pies and anything else fattening, put speed limiters on cars, stop TV programmes at 10 so we can all get a good night's sleep. Oops I forgot - the Labour 'nanny state' government has gone. What a relief!

The bottom line is show people the evidence and let people make their own choice! Thank God that we have a National Govt this term.
